Pressure gauges are often treated as an afterthought — something to bolt on at the end of a build. But a gauge that’s wrong for the application can give misleading readings, fail prematurely, or become a safety hazard. Selecting the right gauge upfront saves time, money, and headaches down the line.

Dry vs. Liquid-Filled Gauges

One of the first decisions you’ll face is whether to use a dry gauge or a liquid-filled gauge.

Dry gauges are the standard choice for stable, low-vibration environments where readings are taken periodically and conditions are relatively consistent. They’re simple, cost-effective, and easy to read.

Liquid-filled gauges — typically filled with glycerin or silicone oil — are designed for more demanding conditions. The fill fluid dampens pointer vibration, protects internal components from shock and pulsation, and helps prevent moisture from condensing inside the housing. If your system involves pumps, compressors, or other equipment that generates vibration, a liquid-filled gauge is usually the better investment.

Matching the Gauge to Your Pressure Range

Every gauge has a rated pressure range, and choosing the right range is critical for accuracy and longevity. The general rule is to select a gauge with a full-scale range roughly twice your normal operating pressure. This keeps the needle in the middle third of the dial during normal operation — the zone where most gauges are most accurate — and leaves headroom for pressure spikes without pegging the needle against the stop.

Housing Material and Mount Type

The environment where the gauge will live should drive your housing choice. Brass gauges work well for standard applications involving air, water, and oil. Stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance for harsh environments or chemical exposure. ABS plastic housings are lightweight and economical for less demanding installations.

Mount type is equally straightforward: bottom mount gauges connect from the base and are common in panel and pipe installations. Back mount gauges connect from the rear, which works well when space is limited or when connections need to be routed behind a panel.

Vacuum and Compound Gauges

Not every system operates above atmospheric pressure. Vacuum gauges measure negative pressure, making them essential for suction lines, vacuum pumps, and HVAC systems. Compound gauges read both positive and negative pressure on a single dial — a versatile option for systems that may swing between both ranges.
