What is a Bend Radius, and What is the Minimum Bend Radius for Hydraulic Hoses?

Every day, we get asked various hydraulic hose-related questions by our customers. Our helpful team at ASJ Hose & Fittings is more than happy to help give you the answers you need. In fact, two common inquiries we receive include, “What is a bend radius?” and “What is the hydraulic hose minimum bend radius?”

Read on for answers!

What is a Bend Radius?

The bend radius of a hose refers to the diameter at which a hose is bent. A hose’s minimum bend radius is the smallest diameter the hose can bend before it becomes damaged and, thus, unsafe to operate. The distance to the inside of the hose is as the hose is bent at a 90-degree angle is what’s measured when determining the bend radius.

Minimum Bend Radius of Hydraulic Hoses

The minimum bend radius of hose will be different based on numerous factors. For instance, the three layers a hydraulic hose is constructed of – the core, reinforcement, and cover – will be important in determining the minimum diameter at which it can bend. Whether the hose has spirals or braids and how many layers of wire it features can also impact its bend radius.

As an example of how the bend radius of different hoses can vary, hoses made of braided steel, because it’s stiffer than its spiral hose counterpart, will have a tighter bend radius. In addition, hoses of a higher pressure have greater layers of reinforcement and, in turn, will have a larger bend radius than lower-pressure hoses.

Note that as the diameter of a hose is increased, its flexibility is lessened – and vice versa.

Why the Bend Radius Matters

The bend radius is important for two main reasons. The first reason is because different applications or scenarios may require a tighter bend radius than others. Secondly, knowing the minimum bend radius of your hydraulic hose is vital to ensure you don’t end up accidentally damaging it, say, by bending it around corners tighter than it is capable of being bent. Being mindful of how far your hose can bend can give you better insight regarding safely operating your hydraulic system.
